We can’t just come and go without saying a word.”
MAUD BAIGNÈRES, RÉALISATRICE ET SCÉNARISTE
English & 日本語 below ↓
Between Tokyo, Paris, and New York, Maud Baignères has forged a cinematic vision focused on the human, on nature, art and on what connects us.
A director and screenwriter, she develops a sensitive form of cinema shaped by travel, the exploration of intimacy, and a close attention to gestures, bodies, and cultures. She works across documentaries and fiction films, as well as music videos, advertising films, and institutional films, in France and internationally.
She has directed several fiction short films, selected and awarded at numerous festivals in France and abroad. One of them, Pour une fois qu’on était samedi, starring Sacha Bourdo and Brigitte de Villepoix, was broadcast on Canal+.
She then began a decisive collaboration with director and graphic artist Christoph Schwaiger. Together, they formed the duo Les Kampaï, creating institutional films, title sequences, music videos, and campaigns for luxury brands in France and Germany, as well as an awareness-raising film on Amazon deforestation for Greenpeace.
Spending long periods in Japan, she directed numerous reports for Tracks (Arte), Tentations (Canal+), and Pink (France 2) over nearly ten years, while also developing an extensive body of documentary work for cultural institutions.
At the Musée des Arts décoratifs, for the exhibition MUTATIONS, she directed a series of nine films devoted to contemporary French craftsmanship, bringing designers, artists, and artisans into dialogue. She also co-directed, with Éric-Sébastien Faure Lagorce, the documentary Design en Capitale for the channel Stylia.
For France 2, she directed numerous portraits of artists and artisans for the weekly series Dans l’atelier, and from 2008 to 2018 produced monthly cultural reports across France, Europe, and around the world: exhibitions, festivals, concerts, as well as portraits of major figures such as Patti Smith, Yoko Ono, Sarah Moon, JoeyStarr, and Agnès Varda.
She co-directed with Arnaud Riou the feature-length documentary ETUGEN, released in cinemas on January 4, 2023. The film explores our relationship to existence and to nature through encounters with shamans, philosophers, doctors, and scientists, from the Mongolian steppes to the forests of the Amazon. It attracted more than 45,000 viewers in France and went on an international tour.
Since 2019, she has been directing the documentary series SEA ART, devoted to the intimate relationship between artistic creation and the oceans, in collaboration with Time for the Ocean and with the support of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte (FABA) and Phytomer. Its seven episodes, featuring Miquel Barceló, Julie Gautier, Fabrice Hyber, Jason deCaires Taylor, Bianca Bondi, Jérémy Gobé and Jérémy-Loup Quer, have been screened at the Palais de Tokyo, the Fondation Carmignac, the Cannes Film Festival, the Locarno Film Festival and the Rencontres de la photographie in Arles.
She is currently preparing two feature-length documentaries. L’ART SANS FILTRE follows children aged 5 to 12 in Arles as they discover two thousand years of art without knowing anything of its history, its names or its codes. Free of everything we have learned, their gaze sees in the works what our knowledge keeps us from seeing. The film makes this not-knowing its strength: it is the children who teach us how to look.
With ALL IN LOVE, she tells her own story for the first time: a passionate, all-consuming love she shared twenty years ago with Bertrand, between the United States, Japan and India, filmed and written by the two lovers from the very first day until the breakup. Today, she reopens these intimate archives to set what they were living then, without knowing the ending, against what she understands of it twenty years later. The original score is by Mathieu Blanc-Francard (Sinclair).
She has also led a film workshop with a primary school class in Arles.
As a photographer, she publishes poetic, minimalist nature images under the name Ikigai Camargue, available as limited-edition fine art prints.
In fiction, she came up with the original idea for La Cloche a sonné and was its lead screenwriter: a comedy directed by Bruno Herbulot, starring Fabrice Luchini, François Cluzet and Elsa Zylberstein, released in cinemas in 2005. She is now developing several fiction projects, mostly comedies: Georges et Louis, Paris-Tokyo, La vie entre parenthèses, Stuck in Tarifa.
Based in Arles, she created LOOPULSE STUDIO with chief editor Chloé Nicolas and graphic designer Jüne Malard. Working between Arles and Paris, the studio makes life films for private clients: a memory, a chapter, a story to pass on. She conceives each project as a space for shared creation, dialogue and trust.
